Digital Literacy in New Hampshire Classrooms

Join this Christa McAuliffe Sabbatical recipient as he reflections on his yearlong project with an emphasis on social studies/ science classrooms. The project, called Digital Literacy NH, included school and classroom visits to public K-12 schools around NH (16 in all). Findings and reflections include how teachers from diverse areas are using digital tools to improve the scope, quality and relevance of their instruction.

Provide ALL your students with crystal clear instruction. Teacher voice amplification is the auditory equivalent of turning the lights on in the classroom. Hearing is the primary channel for learning. General education students experience significant auditory challenges in today's classrooms as well those with hearing impairments. Large class sizes, nearby street noise and sound coming from adjacent hallways and rooms, HVACs, projector fans, and other variables create noise barriers to effective classroom listening. Classroom Audio overcomes noise and other distractions by providing an even distribution of the teacher's voice as well as other audio sources (TV, DVD, whiteboard, computer, CD player, iPod). We welcome you to a discussion of some of the challenges facing educators and students in providing clear spoken instruction to all students and how Lightspeed Technologies is providing solutions to address these issues.

As the Smarter Balanced online assessment of the CCSS for Mathematics and English Language Arts approaches, schools/districts are concerned about the achievement of their students on these tests. The computer adaptive assessments represent a completely different way of testing our students. This requires an integration of media and technology literacy into our teaching practices. The ICT Literacy Standards support this integration and fit nicely with the pedagogy required for teaching to the CCSS and all modern learning standards. Explore the connections between the CCSS and ICT Literacy and discuss ways in which subtle shifts in your teaching methods can help support both, as they help reinforce each other.

The Best Education Apps at FETC (Florida Education Technology Conference)
Mobile learning was a cornerstone of the FETC conference in Orlando last month (Feb. 2012) and the buzz culminated with the conference's closing session: An App Shootout where ed-tech pros Gail Lovely, Hall Davidson, and Jenna Linskens shared some of their favorite apps for Apple devices.
